Cooling Towers - Ferrybridge

FerryBridge from High Melton

This is an A4 size study based on a view from High Melton, just north of Doncaster, looking out over Melton fields towards the Ferrybridge cooling towers in the Pontefract area.

The church spire on the right  is in the Picton area I believe.

 

I am hoping to turn this into a much larger painting for the Holmfirth Art Week exhibition which is later this year in July.

This is a caricature of the famous Indian and Yorkshire cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

I painted this for a friend of mine who was over in the UK for 6 weeks from India and I knew he enjoyed cricket and Tendulkar was a hero of his.

I gave him this picture on his last day in the UK - hopefully of a nice reminder of his visit here.

Mme Monboddo

 

Madamme Monboddo

This is a true-to-life painting of Jean-Patrique Monboddo's wife - Magdalena. 

Not a lot is really known about Magdalena. She began her Parisian life as the artist's muse - but  their working relationship very soon developed into a love affair.

They finally married and lived their last years together in the shadow of 
the Sacre Coeur in Montmartre, Paris.

This is  Jean Monboddo's granddaughter Magdalena.
Often seen in Monaco playing the tables with her feminesque boyfriends.

She is the only surviving heir to the Monboddo  estate.

Nanny Lil

Allegedly, Nanny Lil lived at number 17b Coronation Street and was neihbours to Ena Sharples and Minnie Caldwell. Lilly was never seen on set as she was camera shy. As a devout Christian Lilly was ashamed of her gambling addiction so would stay indoors during filming to tend to her cat Bobby.

Paris Rouge - Le Metro

Le Sinage Rouge - Paris Metro

Paris Rouge is a theme that no doubt will run and run, this is painting #39, and as anyone who's been to Paris will know - Le Metro is wonderful for traversing the city at toute vitesse.
Voyours recall Les Parisienne and their illicit rendezvous underground on the Metro - each brief encounter creates their very own episode from a film noir (18 rated).

La femme avec robe rouge

This painting (#38) was reproduced from a photograph I came across a couple of weeks ago whilst searching for objects that were French & Rouge, (a new theme I may develop further btw).
 She looks rather menacing 'la Madame' in this - with an" attendez que je vous rentrez chez vous "(wait till I get you home sort of look)  but I'm sure she's tres enchanting, posing in the mid afternoon sunshine
in Paris awaiting company on the terrace.

Attercliffe Water Lillies II

This is a slight variation on the previous painting (#36) with subtle hue changes due to the changing light conditions in the day.
Every moment of light is subtlety different - cooler colours in early morning becoming warmer
 as the day progresses.

Lillies on t 'Cliffe

Attercliffe Water Lillies

I normally catch the train into Sheffield, however the other day I took the tram
from Meadowhall to Sheffield.

It's not exactly a picturesque route, but very interesting nevertheless.
The tram runs alongside the old industrial quarter for a length, taking in the railway and the Sheffield and Rotherham canal.

As the the tram approached Attercliffe I spotted these water lillies erupting colour out of the
gloomy, murky canal below.

I can't but help noticing these now everytime I pass, everytime different with the varying light conditions.

The Elmanton Hotel

The Elmanton - Skegness, Lincolnshire

This lovely B&B sits on Scarborough Avenue in sunny Skegness.

We usually stay here on our visits to this locale and we are always looked after really, really well by our hosts.

The next time we visit I will give them a print of this, they have a few "contemporary" paintings inside and this should sit well with those.

Scarborough Foreshore

Princess Cafe

Over the Easter break we visited Scarborough,
which is not rare for folks who live in Yorkshire.
This is one of a few sketches done at the time, a colourful little cafe on Foreshore Road.

Flowers from Brid

This story is a little convoluted - bear with me !

I was in the Sheffield Millennium Galleries this week having a muse around a brilliant exhibition on

"The Family in British Art"

One of my favourite paintings on display was one of David Hockney's,

portraying his mother and father in their front room in Bradford.

Juxtaposed between them both is a vase of tulips.

This caught my eye, I know photography is frowned upon in the gallery
but I managed to snap a picture with my

pin-hole phone (for reference material) and that gave me the idea for this painting.

Mr. Hockney now lives in Bridlington, East Yorkshire - hence

Point of Ayr Lighthouse - Flintshire

Point of Ayr Lighthouse

Point of Ayr Lighthouse, lies on Talacre Beach, Flintshire in North Wales.

It is a redundant grade II lighthouse in a spectacular position

on the northernmost point of mainland Wales.

It recently came on the market for £100k - not exactly your usual 2 up 2 down.

Bamburgh Castle

Whereas it's a well known fact that Yorkshire is God's own country I believe Northumberland to be God's own coastline.

A very picturesque part of England,
Bamburgh Castle lies on this coast looking out towards Holy Island.

Paris by Nuit

Le Eiffel Tower

I recall looking out of our hotel window in Montmatre, looking out over Paris and seeing the Eiffel Tower all lit up and sparkling, unfortunately by the time I fetched my camera it had refrained from dancing and fallen back into darkness.

However, as our stay in this beautiful city matured, we discovered that on the hour the tower did dance to the Parisian tune 'de vie'  with ecstatic illumination.

I now understand why the great artists of this world have to live in Paris - it is a rite of passage for anyone who has passion in their soul.

It may not have been painted in Paris but still carries the spirit.

Mount Fuji Japan

In a slight deviation from my normal contributions, this latest picture is of sunrise around Mount Fuji in the backdrop to the town of Fujiyoshida, Japan.

Unfortunately I didn't have to visit Japan for this, it was reproduced from a photo I took off the television, cheating I know !

Surprisingly enough I saw this shot while watching an episode of  " An Idiot Abroad "  a couple of weeks ago and thought "that's got potential" - thank goodness for TVRs.

Even if you hate the TV programme I think you'll agree this view is pretty spectacular.

Saint Mary's Church Angle

St. Mary's Church Angle

Angle is a very small picturesque village on the south west Pembrkeshire coast. 

This picture is of the 13th century church situated centrally in the village of Angle.

The Church has great historical value and is a memorial to all the lost mariners from this area.

This is a picture of Kilnback, a grand house overlooking the edge of the Milford Haven estuary in Pembrokeshire.
Many years ago this house was occupied by a close family friend who has very fond memories of her time living here.
